Standard multilayer PCB boards are still dominant in the PCB market
Printed circuit board (PCB) refers to using printing technology to form a conductive circuit pattern or a functional board containing printed components on an insulating substrate according to a predetermined design, which is used to realize the interconnection and relay transmission between electronic components. It is an indispensable basic component of electronic information products. According to the current situation, the standard multilayer board is still dominant in the PCB market.
The output value of standard multilayer boards accounts for a high proportion
From the perspective of the output value of each market segment, the main products of China’s printed circuit board market segment include standard multi-layer boards, HDI boards, rigid single-layer boards, and flexible boards. In 2021, the output value of products above accounted for 49%, 18%, 14%, and 14%, respectively, while the output value of high-value IC substrates accounted for 4%, and the output value of rigid-flex boards accounted for only 1%.
The output value of standard multi-layer boards is rapidly expanding
From 2017 to 2021, the output value of standard multilayer boards in mainland China continued to grow, and the growth rate increased year by year. In 2021, the output value of standard multilayer PCBs reached US$25.162 billion, a year-on-year increase of 47.4%, which is higher than the overall growth rate of the entire industry. Standard multilayer boards are currently the main product in the PCB industry, and their output value accounted for 49% of the entire industry in 2021.
The growth rate of HDI board output value leads the whole industry
From 2017 to 2021, the output value of HDI boards in mainland China fluctuated, and the growth rate has been increasing year by year since 2019. In 2021, the output value of HDI boards reached US$9.021 billion, a year-on-year increase of 51.9%, leading the overall industry growth rate of 28%. HDI board is currently the second largest product in the PCB industry, and its output value accounted for 18% of the entire industry in 2021.
Rigid single-layer PCB output value fluctuated
From 2017 to 2021, the output value of rigid single-layer and double layer PCB in mainland China fluctuated, and the growth rate fluctuate greatly. In 2021, the output value of rigid single and double-sided PCB reached US$7.348 billion, a year-on-year increase of 40%, which is higher than the overall growth rate of the entire industry. In 2021, its output value accounted for 14% of the industry, but the proportion has declined in recent years.
The output value of flexible boards rebounded after 2019
From 2017 to 2021, the output value of flex PCB in mainland China fluctuated, and the growth rate rebounded after 2019. In 2021, the output value of flexible boards reached US$6.987 billion, a year-on-year increase of 33.8%, slightly higher than the overall growth rate of the entire industry. Flexible boards are currently the fourth largest category of products in the PCB industry, and their output value accounted for 14% of the entire industry in 2021.
Development Trend of PCB (Printed Circuit Board) Industry
The technological development of the PCB industry is closely related to the demand for downstream electronic terminal products. With the rapid development of electronic information technology and the acceleration of electronic product replacement, the new generation of electronic products is developing in the direction of miniaturization, portability and multi-function, and promotes the development of PCB products in the direction of high density, high performance and environmental protection.
1. High density
High density puts forward higher requirements for circuit board aperture size, wiring width, and number of layers. High-density interconnect technology (HDI) is the embodiment of advanced PCB technology. Compared with ordinary multi-layer boards, HDI boards accurately set blind holes and buried holes to reduce the number of through holes, save PCB routing area, and greatly increase component density.
2. High performance
High performance mainly refers to improving the performance of PCB in terms of impedance and heat dissipation, thereby enhancing the reliability of products. Modern electronic products require fast information transmission rate and a large amount of information transmission, which promotes the development of digital signal technology in the direction of high frequency.
Only a PCB with good impedance can ensure the effective transmission of information, ensure the stability of the final product performance, and realize complex functions. Because high-performance products generate more heat, PCBs with good heat dissipation performance are required to reduce the temperature of the products.
Under this trend, PCBs with better heat dissipation performance such as metal substrates and thick copper plates are widely used, and PCB products are characterized by the development of high performance.
3. Environmental protection development
The production process of the PCB industry is complicated, some of which will pollute the environment, and the process of pollutant treatment is relatively complicated. With the improvement of environmental protection requirements in various countries, the PCB industry has formulated a series of environmental protection regulations.
Taking into account the needs of sustainable development, the use of new environmentally friendly materials and improved technology to create new energy-saving and environmentally friendly products will also become the development direction of the PCB industry.
