What is PCB layout software & how can it assist designers
Table of Contents
PCB layout software is an essential tool for every PCB designer. In some cases, designers can do some layout processes purely by hand. However, the larger the design is, the harder it is to produce a clean and perfect result without using the software.
There is a range of PCB softwares available on the market today. But how to decide which one to pick? And what exactly can it do? These are some of the important questions we will tackle in this article.
What is PCB layout software?
A printed circuit board (PCB) layout software is a computer program to design printed circuit board. A PCB layout software allows a designer to create a circuit board with all its components, including passive and active components, traces, and pads.
Printed circuit boards are used in many devices, from simple audio amplifiers to complex microprocessors. Still, they all have one thing in common: they all require a printed circuit board designer who knows what they are doing.
The main reason for using PCB layout software is that it gives much more control over the design than other methods, such as hand drawing or using a CAD system. For example, if a designer wants to change an existing part on the board, it is much easier if it’s already designed rather than starting from scratch each time.
Common PCB layout softwares
The most common types of PCB layout software include:
- Altium Designer (formerly Protel) – This program has been around for over 30 years and is well known for its ease of use, powerful tools, and flexibility. It’s also affordable and has good support from Altium.
- Fusion 360– A popular CAD program that works on Windows, Mac OS X, iOS, and Android devices. Fusion 360 supports 3D modeling, 2D drafting, and CAM/CNC machining features. It’s also free for hobbyists!
- Ansys RedHawk–Ansys RedHawk is an EDA tool created specifically for RF/microwave circuit design. It includes advanced features such as S-parameter simulation, Smith chart analysis, and high-speed digital circuit simulation capabilities.
- IC Design Software for FPGAs – This type of IC design software is used to create custom integrated circuits (ICs) using field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), which are chips the user can configure after manufacturing.
- Schematic Capture Software – Schematic capture software allows designers to draw out electrical circuits on paper before turning them into physical devices.
- NI Multisim –Engineers and designers use this program for simulating electronic circuits, circuit boards, and their components. It has a wide range of features that are useful for designing PCBs.
- Autodesk EAGLE –EAGLE (Easy Application Generator for Layout) is a PCB software that allows designers to create PCB layouts from scratch or with pre-made templates (like Arduino Uno).
Which software is best for PCB designing?
Eagle CAD is a comprehensive and powerful tool for designing and manufacturing printed circuit boards (PCBs). It is available for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and Raspberry Pi.
Eagle CAD was developed by CadSoft Computer GmbH, a company based in Germany. The software has been used in hobbyist electronics and small business applications since 1993. The software can be downloaded free of charge or purchased as part of a package that includes support subscriptions, PCB manufacturing services, and other professional services.
How do you make a PCB Layout?
PCB layout is the process of designing a printed circuit board (PCB). It is a multi-step process that includes schematic capture, PCB design, Gerber generation, and fabrication.
The following are the steps involved in making a PCB layout:
- Define all the specifications
- Put the semantic structure
- Place all the parts
- Drill some holes
- Trace the lines.
What can be achieved with PCB layout software?
PCB layout software is an important tool for PCB designers. With a good PCB layout tool, designers can easily design a circuit board by simply dragging and dropping components onto the workspace.
Designers can achieve a possible number of combinations with PCB layout software. Designers can create anything from simple circuits to complex ones with hundreds of components.
How to use PCB layout software?
The following steps will help designers learn how to use PCB layout software:
- Open the PCB layout softwareand create a new project.
- Designate the number of layers in the project.
- Outline each component on the appropriate layer according to its function or type of material used in manufacturing it.
- Place the components within the outline and resize them as required so that they fit within their allotted space without overlapping each other while also keeping them electrically connected to other components on different layers or planes where needed using copper traces or wires.
How do I get a PCB layout software?
Many PCB layout software are available on the market, each with its capabilities and quirks. Some are expensive, but there are also free programs that can handle simple designs.
We recommend starting with Eagle because it’s open source and has a large community of designers who contribute code and tutorials to help get started.
Here’s how to get it:
1) Download Eagle
2) Install Eagle on the computer
3) Open Eagle and create a new project by clicking File > New Project from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
4) Double-click the “bare PCB” icon in the project tree on the left side of the screen. This will open a blank page to create the design!
Is PCB design software free to download?
Many different PCB layout software packages are available, but not all are free. Some programs have a monthly fee, while others require an upfront payment.
Considerations when choosing a PCB layout software
PCB layout software is a crucial tool for any electronics designer. It allows one to create a circuit board from scratch, arrange components on it and simulate the circuit to check for errors before sending it off for fabrication. But which PCB layout software should designers use?
There are many different PCB layout software, each with its strengths and weaknesses. So how to choose? Here are some things to consider when selecting a PCB layout software:
- User experience– Does it have an intuitive interface? Is it easy to learn how to use it?
- Price – How much does the software cost? Designers don’t want to pay too much for something that doesn’t work well enough if there isn’t much difference between one program and another.
- Functionality –How many features does it offer? Does it include an auto-router or schematic capture tool? How about DFM checks and simulation tools? These can be very useful when designing boards.
- Support – What kind of support does the company provide for its product? Are they active in social media forums where users can ask questions? Does the company provide tutorials on using its programs or offer training classes?
Summing up
The PCB world is rapidly evolving and could sometimes be a little daunting for beginners new to this field. If someone plans to doing PCB design, they will most likely need an accompanying software regardless of whether it’s free or comes with a hefty price tag, as features and functionality vary between these two.
At first glance, there are hundreds of layout software packages, and just like in any sector, there are many that come and go but only leave a few standing out from the crowd.
A designer should find PCB layout software that allows one to map out projects in the most efficient way possible.
